MAGO therapy (splint therapy)
Treatment is different for adults versus children.MAGO an acronym for Maxillary Anterior Guided Orthosis. The MAGO is a diagnostic bite splint designed to bring temporary harmony to your jaw joints and muscles for the purpose of your dentist to accurately diagnose the relationship of the upper and lower teeth. The MAGO works by preventing the shape of the teeth to influence the arc of closure of the mandible, thus allowing the jaw muscles to position the condyle in the proper position in the joint fossa. The MAGO is worn 24 hours a day 7 days a week for 6-12 weeks and sometime longer. It is removed only to brush and floss 2 times a day for the duration of the appliance. Adjustments of the MAGO and test are done weekly to facilitate joint stabilization. Once the joint appears stable, weekly confirmation records are taken until 3 consecutive records indicate a reproducible stable joint position. At this time, final records are taken including identifying the true hinge (hinge axis) or rotation axis of the jaw joints. The angle of the eminence and sideways movement is recorded and can identify anatomical problems that may otherwise go undiagnosed. This information is programmed into the articulator (chewing simulator) to improve the diagnostic accuracy of the instrument for the development of the appropriate treatment for your chewing system.
